Update from Andy Rimmer

I’ve been here & there over the past few weeks with a family break in Croatia (there for the WC final!) & the New Wine Summer Conference near Shepton Mallet with 35+ Christ Church folk.  It’s a privilege to be able to get away from the everyday stuff of life & have space to reconnect to God, listen to his voice & discover fresh vision for life & work.  It’s important to use this time of year to rediscover the pure joy of just being known by God & participating in his plans & purposes.  It’s like a fresh refreshing fan blowing in the midst of a hot & dry day.

As for New Wine – after 30 years in Somerset it’s all moving in 2019 up to the East of England Showground near Peterborough (about an hour away) - www.new-wine.org/the-move.  I’d love to see at least 70 of all ages join us either camping or in one of the 1000 beds available in local hotels.  There’s always something for everyone – great worship, good teaching, brilliant children’s & youth work & lots of fun things to do.  Worth booking early for good ‘Early Bird’ deals – we’re all aiming to go to Week One (27 July – 2 August 2019). Ask any who went this year for their impressions – it was a special time.

New Staffing – We have spent large parts of the past few months seeking out new staff to enable us as we seek to grow the kingdom here in Barnet.  These days there’s adverts, responses, interview days, references, DBS forms etc but after a rigorous interview process we’re excited about those who will be joining us from September….

  • James & Michele Herring together with their two young children (Talitha (4) & Ruben (3)) will be joining us as Associate Minister from Guernsey where James has been Associate Pastor at the ‘Church on the Rock’ for the past 7 years. Their heart is to build community, encouraging discipleship from within the church which impacts and welcomes those who do not yet know Jesus. He loves worship & is really excited about what’s in store in Barnet in the years ahead.  One area to pray for would be for the right school for Talitha as there are currently no school places for reception available.  Also….their new house at 8 Wentworth Road needs painting from top to toe – any volunteers contact Mary Rimmer on 07979292828
  • Julie Lewis has been part of the church for many years especially leading the ‘Mother’s & Others’ outreach to parents & toddlers on a Wednesday morning each work.  She’s felt a calling to children’s & families work for many years & bringing her on, initially in a part-time capacity will enable us to grow our work in this key area both in & outside the church & with the school as well!
  • Ben Grist (from Poole, Dorset) & McKayla Maddox (from Vancouver, Canada) will be joining us as year-long interns to support the church as a whole in different areas but especially in worship, youth & IT support.  They’ll be living on site (at the Vicarage!) & will play a significant role in shaping things over the next few months.  Please pray for a quick & easy transition to CCB life!

Mission Support – on Sunday at the 10.30am Graham Paddon brought us feedback from his visit to South Africa (Delft) & Malawi (the Scutts) which was excellent.  As part of what he shared he told us that 2 of the YWAM villages that the Scutts are involved with have no electricity but £700 would solve the issue. We have a generous God & so I immediately invited those at the service to give towards this project.  £330 has come in so far but if you’d like to give towards this incredible lifeline for our brothers & sisters in Malawi please drop in the money to the church office as soon as we can so we bless them quickly!

What’s coming up…

Sundays 12th / 19th / 26th August                                                                                                  9.00am - Morning Worship with Communion / 10.30am – All Age with specific focus on the ‘Armour of God’…great fun, worship & input for all the family.

Re-dedication of the Christ Church Old Boys School Boer War memorial

Wednesday 11th July saw the rededication of the Christ Church Old Boys School Boer War memorial by our Honorary Curate Peter Liddelow. A wreath was laid to honour the eight old boys who died in the war of 1899-1902 by Martin Russell, Deputy Lieutenant of the Borough of Barnet.

It was the 115th anniversary of the original dedication by our then vicar, Canon Henry Trotter, and the unveiling of the memorial by Field Marshall Lord Grenfell. A plaque was also placed in the school to their memory in 1903, and this remains on display in the entrance hall of the new school building in Byng Road.

Organised with the involvement of Barnet Museum, a reception followed in the Open Door Centre where Martin Russell also launched a new book published by the Museum containing details of their research into the family and service history of the eight Christ Church men, and others who also fought from Chipping Barnet, set against a timeline of the war in South Africa..

A very sad farewell to Jo James and the family

Jo James is going to be greatly missed - her love, her smile, her compassion & much more.

"When I started to look for an ‘Associate Vicar’ post in 2009, God seemed to make it so clear that Christ Church, Barnet, was the church that we were going to serve in next and in 2010, as we got settled into 8 Wentworth Road, we couldn’t believe how lovely a place God had found for us to live in! We felt at home so quickly in Barnet – the addition of a kitten and then a puppy helped! and we have always loved the fact that turning left from our front door takes us into town and turning right takes us for a walk in the fields with the dog… and wherever we go, we are bound to see at least one person we know!

Looking back over the past eight years, there have been many highlights - New Wine, Pilgrim, J John’s visit, Prayer week, Secret Church and the contact we’ve had with our Mission Partners over the years are the first things that come to mind. I have loved the many opportunities I’ve had to work with the different staff and church members during my time here - planning and taking services, organising events, praying and working together in various different meetings… I am going to miss so many of you and the fun, encouragement and wisdom you’ve brought to my work here at CCB!

Thank you, too, for all those who I’ve been able to meet up with over the years. Hearing your life stories and allowing me to pray with you, walk with you through difficult journeys, as well as celebrate together in the joys of life has been such a privilege and has encouraged and grown my faith, too.

As well as many joys, there have, of course, been one or two challenges to face over the past eight years! For me, the biggest challenge was when I was diagnosed with M.E. in 2012. As is often the way, learning over the following three years to live with a long-term illness with no known cure also became another opportunity for me to learn about God’s faithful, transforming love in my life – and I love the fact, over three years later, I am still able to share my testimony about how God miraculously healed me completely from the illness in 2015!

We’re so thankful for so many things here in Barnet – the kids have lots of great memories and good friendships from their time at Christ Church School and of course during the time we’ve been here they have both grown several metres… whilst Pete and I have grown numerous grey hairs…! (Proverbs 16.31)

Looking ahead and thinking about moving on to St Paul’s Mill Hill, I find myself marvelling again at God’s perfect plan for our lives. Although it is a real wrench to move away from CCB, I am looking forward to getting to know a new church family over the next few months and  finding out what God’s vision is for Mill Hill. As we start packing up 8 Wentworth Road and think about putting down roots in Mill Hill, we would all appreciate your prayers for a smooth move and enough time to get the Vicarage ready before I hit the ground running on 16th July!"
